ABOUT HUDSON HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS:

Hudson Hospice was established in 1980 to bring the hospice concept to the people of Hudson County. Unlike many hospice programs, Hudson Hospice provides no direct medical or nursing care. Instead, we work cooperatively with other agencies and health facilities in the area, complimenting their direct hospice care programs by providing volunteer services and supportive financial assistance where it is needed. In this way Hudson Hospice volunteers give of themselves, through actual work with patients and families and in many other ways, helping people in need through the difficult days of dying and into the time of bereavement.

VOLUNTEER ROLES:

Patient Care Volunteers:

Hudson Hospice patient care volunteers support both the patient
and family in whatever they may need. They might:
- do shopping and errands
- stay with the patient so the family can have “time off”
- provide transportation for patient or family member
- provide a “listening ear” to patient and/or family
- hold a hand
- read to the patient
- write a letter
- provide telephone reassurance
- share experiences
- offer bi-lingual support
- offer bereavement support

Auxiliary Volunteers:
The Hudson Hospice Auxiliary was started in 1982. Its purpose is to raise funds for those hospice families that need financial assistance. Members meet once a month to plan and run four major fundraisers a year.
